Farm Sanctuary

Thanksgiving providing "food for thought". Colleen submitted
her editorial piece to KQED (San Francisco's NPR station) and
it was accepted for the station's "Perspectives"

turkeys are friends, not food.

LETTERS
FOR TURKEYS
Media outreach is one of the most effective ways to spread a message far
and wide, and letters to the editor are a perfect opportunity to send
a compassionate Thanksgiving message. Timely, unique and well-written
letters have a good chance for publicationthe media is always looking
for turkey news and stories around the Thanksgiving holiday.
The topic can be anything from turkey industry facts, to alternative Thanksgiving
foods and recipes, to a Turkey adoption story. Nearly every newspaper
has a Letters to the Editor sectioncall your local newspaper(s)
and ask to speak with the person who handles Letters to the Editor.
The paper will provide you with the information you need, such as word
limit, deadline dates for submission, etc.

SPONSOR AN ADVERTISEMENT IN YOUR LOCAL
NEWSPAPER
Run an educational ad in your local newspapers to teach people about modern-day
turkey production, and encourage people to have a healthy and humane holiday
by having a vegetarian Thanksgiving. Farm Sanctuary has camera-ready advertisements
that we can send directly to your newspapers. You'll need to:
- Call your local newspaper's
advertising department to discern ad rates and sizes. Ad rates vary
enormously depending on the size and circulation of the paper. For example,
a 6 x 10 inch ad in the Weekly Calistogan (circulation 6,000)
newspaper) costs about $480, while a quarter page ad in the San Francisco
Chronicle (circulation 525,000) costs about $10,200.
- Reserve your ad space at
least one month before the date you would like to run the ad. Note:
Advertising space must be paid in full before your ad space is confirmed,
so be sure to ask when your payment is due.
- Once you have paid for and
confirmed the ad, email or call Farm Sanctuary and give us the contact
information for the newspaper. We will contact the newspaper directly
and send the correct size camera-ready ad directly to the newspaper.

a Public Service Announcement aired on public access television in your

TABLING
FOR TURKEYS
Setting up a literature and display table is an effective outreach tool
to teach people about farmed animal abuse and what they can do to stop
it. Most people simply don't know how animals used for food production
are treated. Recent polls have demonstrated that when people DO learn
how farm animals are raised, the overwhelming majority are against it.
Every person you reach and teach is one more person who can save hundreds
of animals in their lifetime...by going vegetarian. Farm Sanctuary can
provide you quantities of FREE literature, posters and other educational
materials for your outreach tabling needs.

resources.

of issues from the cruelties of turkey production to reasons to
go vegetarian. Farm Sanctuary produces many effective and informational
leaflets to help activists educate people for the Thanksgiving holiday.
